In this paper we review and analyze the current trends and research efforts in the area of adaptive user interfaces (AUIs) for different applications and domains. We present some of the current challenges for AUIs and the three main aproaches used to address these challenges: Artificial Intelligence (AI), User Modeling (UM) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). AI approach has been aimed toward the development of novel inference mechanisms and algorithms to monitor user actions, interactions, etc. to discover and learn new patterns and provide assistance to the user. UM approach has focused on personalization and current research is aimed at modeling user's features and behaviors as the main component for adaptation. HCI pursues adaptation through integration of different modalities to enhance the communication channel between the system and the user. We conclude with a discussion of the revised approaches and present the challenges that remain open as possible future research lines.
