The paper presents a study on the torque performance of a novel switched reluctance motor (SRM) with E-shaped modular stator and segment rotor based on direct instantaneous torque control (DITC). The structure of the machine and the main notion of DITC are first introduced. The corresponding control rules in each inductance region are then described according to the characteristics of asymmetric power converter. In order to test the method, a drive system is simulated and an experimental platform is developed. A good agreement between some simulations and experiments of total torque, phase torque and phase current shows that DITC is practicable for mitigating the torque ripple of the novel SRM.
