Side-impact collisions account for a substantial amount of crashes. One of the causation is that drivers don't always use optimal strategy — particularly swerving behaviour — in emergency situations. Among all strategies, a considerable phenomenon that drivers tend to swerve to the same direction as the obstacle was analyzed in this paper. From the perspective of priority level, feasible avoidance behaviour for critical crossing conflict was discussed in this paper with particular emphasis on swerving direction. To that end, a driving simulation experiment was conducted concerning how situational parameters of the conflict scenario relate to drivers' avoidance manoeuvre. The results proved the existence of drivers' same-direction-pattern (SDP) of their swerving manoeuvre. Both incursion side and priority level significantly affect the extent of SDP, resulting in various collision rates. The work serves as a foundation for further research on driver modelling, causation analysis, and Advanced Driver Assistant Systems (ADAS) development.
