The author addresses the problem of how to reduce the cost, increase the reliability and meet the precision requirements to vehicle location systems operating as part of an on-board navigation system. An approach to the problem is to combine a Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation receiver with traditional dead reckoning systems, and to use processing to calculate the current position. Some problems connected with such an approach, concerning optimal hardware and software organization, and relevant data processing strategy, are discussed.
