The digital twin concept has emerged as a promising approach in the aeronautical field for enhancing operational efficiency, safety, and decision-making processes. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the application of the digital twin concept in the aeronautical domain, focusing on the integration of various simulation components including several detailed simulators of different types of vehicles (drones, remoted piloted aircraft, general aviation), a multi-constellation global navigation satellite system simulator, a scenario simulator for reproducing opportunity traffic, an air traffic controller station emulator, and a gateway for distributed simulations. The integration of these components enables a holistic representation of the aeronautical environment and allows performing real time human and hardware in the loop simulations. On the one hand it facilitates real-time monitoring, analysis, and decision support in complex scenarios; on the other hand, the exploitation of this digital twin reduces cost, time and risks of development of new procedures and innovative technologies. Indeed, it minimizes the need for actual flight tests, and enables the execution of both human performance and technical performance assessments. The paper discusses the architecture, functionalities, and potential benefits of the proposed digital twin system, along with challenges and future research directions.
