Summary form only given. For an intensity modulated source, light propagation in turbid media can be described by diffuse photon density waves. Through measuring these waves, the optical properties of the medium can be determined. In the near infrared photon migration in tissue is described by diffusion, since scattering dominates absorption. In this paper we show that the optical properties of a small (ca. 1 cm thick) object can be measured with an absolute accuracy of 5% by immersion into a known reference medium. This high accuracy could be a step towards non-invasive tissue spectroscopy without the necessity of performing a spatial scan.
