This paper presents the model predictive control of a standalone microgrid (SMG) comprising a self-excited induction generator (SEIG) coupled with micro-hydro and solar photovoltaic as renewable energy sources (RESs). Additionally, a battery energy storage system (BSS) is considered to overcome the intermittent nature of RESs and provide uninterruptible power to consumer loads connected at the point of common coupling (PCC). A single voltage source inverter (VSI), along with individual DC-DC converters of the PV and BSS are utilized to interface them at the PCC of SMG. A constant switching frequency model predictive control (CSF-MPC) is developed for the VSI to achieve multiple features, such as active power injection, regulating the PCC voltage profile, and synchronizing the SEIG-based micro-hydro RES to the PCC. The performance of the proposed control is demonstrated using MATLAB-based simulation under various operating conditions like step change in generation and load. Moreover, the fault ride-through (FRT) capability of the control scheme is also verified for a short circuit triple-line to ground (LLLG) fault near the interconnection of the SEIG-based micro-hydro RES and the PCC of SMG.
