This paper deals with a model predictive (MP) based control of single phase microgrid (MG). The various components of MG include solar photovoltaic array (SPVA), battery energy storage system (BESS), voltage source inverter (VSI), bidirectional converter (BDC), boost converter (BC) and linear/nonlinear loads. A synchronized switching of power converters provides seamless transition from islanded (IS) to grid connected (GC) mode and vice-versa. The VSI operates in MP current and voltage control scheme to offer active power injection and enhances power quality through current harmonics mitigation and reactive power compensation in GC mode, whereas in IS mode, it maintains stable voltage at load terminals. The BDC controlling the BESS, operates in MP current and power control scheme, charges BESS in GC mode, whereas it maintains power balance with stable DC link voltage in IS mode. The BC operates SPVA at maximum power point tracking mode or voltage regulation mode. The state of charge based energy management of MG offers comprehensive control of the MG ensuring continual supply to the loads under dynamic changes in irradiation and load changes. The effectiveness of the developed control is tested using MATLAB/Simulink environment.
