A fast macroblock mode selection algorithm based on inter-view global disparity is proposed to improve the encoder efficiency of JMVM, with insignificant degradation in picture quality and bit rate increase. The proposed fast mode selection algorithm promotes the encoding speed through partly searching method when encoding most of the frames in multiview video sequence. The macroblock mode of current macroblock is predicted with modes of the corresponding macroblock and its eight neighboring macroblocks. Simulation results show that the proposed fast algorithm promotes the encoding speed by 2.35~4.33 times in comparison with JMVM, while the rate distortion performance is almost maintained.
