This document outlines a scheme of classification, a taxonomy, for spacecraft instruments (aka space payloads). Space Scientific Instrument Taxonomy (SSIT) was developed for use in tools and databases developed in support of assessments performed by The Aerospace Corporation for the NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD). The intention is to create a universal taxonomy that encompasses the range of all space instrument types that have historically flown or that are anticipated in the near future. However, this taxonomy concentrates on scientific space flight instruments with the intention of being compatible with multiple classifications that have been used in other scientific space flight instrument cost models developed by multiple organizations. SSIT was designed to be compatible with other space instrument taxonomies but is of higher fidelity and broader in scope than any previously presented. The space instruments are classified in a three-level hierarchy based on how similar they are, emphasizing traits that affect an instrument's complexity and cost. Each lower-level category is a subset of the one above. In this document the categories are presented in an outline manner and have been numbered for easier reference. For each category and sub-category, there is a description along with examples of the types of instruments and measurements typically associated with that category. In some cases, there are decision trees provided to aid a user to determine in which category their instrument belongs. SSIT category descriptions are written with the intention that they can be understood by a user with a general scientific or engineering background without the need of in-depth expert knowledge or jargon specific to each space instrument category. This is an initial attempt at organizing and defining the categories of space instruments. It is proposed to elicit feedback from the general space community in the hope that a community-accepted taxonomy can be developed. As such, it is a work in progress.
