In this work, we propose a hierarchical approach to tackle the real-time dynamics of an online delivery platform. In our approach, the large-sized online delivery problem is transformed into a series of multiple capacity types CVRP-PDTW (Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem with Pickup and Delivery and Time Windows) with urgency prioritization, which can be solved separately by our in-house vehicle routing solver, Grab Vehicle Routing Optimizer (VRO). The key benefit of this approach is to maximize the capacity of the platform to serve numerous delivery orders within a short period of time. It also helps to make the routing process more tractable and scalable in a real-time environment. To demonstrate the proposed approach, we carried out a series of experiments with the real data derived from GrabExpress service. The experimental results highlight the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposed method in terms of travel time savings, batching efficiency and vehicle utilization.
