Video coding using a three-dimensional subband decomposition is described and results are shown for 64 kbps. The three-dimensional subband structure allows for adaptive bit allocation between temporal and spatial information. Conditional replenishment is implemented in the low-temporal frequency bands to take advantage of temporal correlations. The high-frequency information is efficiently encoded using geometric vector quantization (GVQ) which takes advantage of the sparse structured data typically found in the high frequency bands. Coding results at 64 kbps on head-and-shoulder sequences typical of video teleconferencing applications are compared with results obtained with the CCITT Recommendation H.261 coder.<>
