In order to shorten the convergence time of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive controllers, the sliding mode speed controller (SMSC) based on the novel sliding mode reaching law (NSMRL) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the inherent limitations of the traditional equivalent reaching law, which often leads to unsatisfactory control performance, are addressed. A series of improvements to the traditional method led to the NSMRL, and a comprehensive comparison of the two methods is made. This comparison highlights the advantages of NSMRL, particularly in its ability to effectively manage discrete sliding mode bands and to vary with the sliding mode surface moment to moment. Then, the respective SMSCs are constructed based on the equivalent reach law and NSMRL. Finally, the validity and superiority of the NSMRL method are verified by simulation experiments.
