This article considers the general problem of tracking a noncooperative target in the presence of specular multipath. We revisit a novel posterior Cramér–Rao bound (PCRB) methodology for this problem [1] and develop a robust interacting multiple model (IMM) extended Kalman filter (EKF) implementation. Both the PCRB and the IMM-EKF augment the target state to include the multipath parameters. The approaches are demonstrated via a simulated scenario, in which an airborne radar tracks a low-altitude airborne target. It is shown that the PCRB increases rapidly subsequent to the multipath effect occurring, indicating that tracking performance is significantly degraded at such times. Furthermore, it is shown that the IMM-EKF offers near-optimal performance, with target state estimation errors consistently within 15% of the PCRB. The IMM-EKF also consistently provides credible estimates. It is concluded that the PCRB methodology and the IMM-EKF tracker provide powerful tools for performance assessment and target state estimation in challenging multipath scenarios.
