With the growth in human and vehicular population, road traffic has emerged as a major urban crisis. The current system of traffic management at traffic junctions is using a fixed signal time for all sides at the junction. This approach has many drawbacks like inability to dynamically adapt to the changing vehicle density and not having any provision to prioritise emergency vehicle movement. A solution is proposed to obtain the vehicle density on each side of the junction using image processing on OpenCV by capturing images of all sides using traffic cameras. This algorithm also provides priority passage when an emergency vehicle is detected. This will lead to an increased efficiency in traffic synchronization with dynamic change in timer value.
