This paper deals with matrix converter based UPFC which has several advantages over traditional rectifier-inverter type power frequency converters. It provides sinusoidal input and output waveforms, with minimal higher order harmonics and no sub harmonics; it has inherent bi-directional energy flow capability; the input power factor can be fully controlled. Last but not least, it has minimal energy storage requirements, which allows to get rid of bulky and lifetime-limited energy-storing capacitors. The main aim of this paper is to present selected results of the analysis of the new UPFC based on matrix converter. Also the paper describes in detail the modulation algorithm used for the matrix converter and the decoupled PI controller used for UPFC. The complete digital simulation of the proposed scheme of UPFC incorporated into the power system is performed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment and the results are presented.
