Route design in civil aviation highly affects the flight time and fuel consumption of a passenger aircraft. In this work, an optimization method for the approach route of the required navigation performance authorization required (RNP AR) is developed. This method provides high flexibility in designing the route. A nonlinear genetic algorithm is employed to optimize the approach route, considering the constraints of a ground surface and obstacles. Case studies demonstrating the performance of the proposed optimization method are also presented. The results show that the proposed method is capable of calculating the optimal route in each case, in accordance with reference approach routes. Additionally, the obtained results are analyzed to evaluate the optimality of the optimization results.
