As the capability of real time hardware in the loop (HIL) systems has expanded over recent years, it has created an environment that provides an opportunity to couple highly accurate component models with the embedded control systems which drive them. One application of this, is the integration of an accurate inverter loss and thermal model in a real time environment. This integration allows for the influence of the control system on the inverter thermal behavior to be dynamically modeled in a closed loop manner for more accurate thermal modeling and opportunities for control optimization. This paper will present an accurate method for real time simulation of inverter loss and thermal behavior using an FPGA based real time system.
