Extensive tests and evaluations of highly automated driving functions are a key factor for the successful introduction of autonomous vehicles. A widespread approach is the extraction or replay of information recorded in a real-world application, for testing systems in open- or closed-loop. The overall process is commonly referred to as “resimulation”. However, although the term is broadly used, its exact definition is open. In this paper, we perform a Systematic Literature Review to identify the common ground between different understandings, supported by an analysis of further related work. We investigate the current understandings, considered components, levels of detail, and applications of resimulation as well as which standards and tools are used for it. In this context, we further come up with a definition of resimulation suitable for future applications in the automotive domain.
