Hard landing or aircraft landing loads is the key performance indicator in civil aviation training, FOQA analysis and aircraft maintenance. In this study, a simplified motion equation of oleo-pneumatic shock absorber has been established to simulate the telescoping process. Numerical solution with typical transportation aircraft parameters evaluates the features’ effects on landing loads with different initial conditions. Employing a supervised machine learning LAR regression algorithm, the relationship between maximum landing load and touchdown vertical descent rate is revealed with actual DFDR data. The results suggest that the touchdown vertical descent rate is the main feature in the prediction of landing loads in majority conditions, however, in special conditions a small touchdown descent rate could also result in relatively high landing loads. In addition, a great deficiency in lift weight ratio would lead to a severe hard landing.
