Summary form only given. Semiconductor lasers are known to be extremely sensitive to any external optical perturbation, such as optical feedback or injection. Research efforts have been directed towards understanding the conditions for which the lasers are stable. The stability of the different types of dynamical behavior of a diode laser (DL) subject to phase-conjugate feedback (PCF) can be visualized using a stability diagram in the plane spanned by the amount of feedback and the frequency detuning /spl delta/=v/sub DL/-V/sub pump/ between DL frequency and the pump frequency of the phase-conjugate mirror (PCM).
