In order to alleviate the congestion occurring in daily lives on our roads due to different reasons causing harmful consequences in many life aspects, an intelligent rerouting system is needed for a more efficient and safe driving experience. In this paper, we design and implement a rerouting system using artificial intelligence algorithms. The aim of this project is to propose a complete system design for rerouting including communication technology, data processing and a rerouting algorithm. Therefore, a literature review about each component in such a system is provided with analysis for each available alternative. Accordingly, an artificial intelligence algorithm for the data processing phase is proposed and implemented. Simulation results using the SUMO simulator are provided to show the enhancement achieved by the proposed algorithm for both the average travel time and travel distance of the rerouted vehicles.
