This paper addresses the limitation of linear winding and needle winding of outer stators for electric drives. A new winding technology based on conventional needle winding is introduced and discussed. Winding heads customized to fit the new process are presented and their geometry is explained. The corresponding winding path is analyzed and evaluated giving design guidelines. Hot Wire Winding is presented as a solution for a more elastic wire behavior. First test results are reported and discussed. Several other possibilities for further process improvement are presented.
