The implementation of a set of commonly used image processing functions on a programmable pixel processor is described. This processor, called the SX, is part of the memory controller of a workstation. Its goal is to provide fast imaging performance at the lowest possible cost. The SX has proved useful because it supports a rich set of instructions and because it is relatively simple to program. Its performance approaches that of add-on image processing hardware at no additional cost to the workstation user.<>
