From the discussion of the simulation results an optimum bit rate is expected to exist for each assigned link capacity, that depends also on the type of fiber used in the network. The maximum Q factor of a single TDM channel at 30 Gbit/s is lower than 4 while three channels at a bit rate of 10 Gbit/s can be transmitted with a Q factor equal to about 14, thus the optimum bit rate for a capacity of 30 Gbit/s is about 10 Gbit/s. The knowledge of the optimum bit rate for the most critical paths in a WDM network can help in the selection of the right WDM granularity.
