Recently there has been a large increase in the transmission capacity of local area networks (LANs) required for computer interconnect applications. In order to meet the future demand to upgrade existing links to operating speeds of 10 Gb/s, cost effective techniques are required that can overcome the modal bandwidth limitations of the multimode fibre. In this paper, following a general review of potential transmission schemes, including wavelength division multiplexing, we review three techniques for overcoming this limit; restricted mode excitation, multilevel coding, and subcarrier multiplexing.
