This paper summarizes and compares some of the techniques that have been used over the past 50 years to detect and track slow moving surface targets in dense clutter environments from a high speed airborne radar platform. Starting from non-coherent single port GMTI radar implementations, airborne GMTI radars have undergone an evolutionary development to arrive at the modern coherent multiple port GMTI configurations that have now become the standard throughout the industry.
