Base station simplification relies on the development of efficient and cost-effective fiber optic mm-wave links between a central station and several base stations and eventually on advancement of photonic signal processing techniques for the links. The authors have proposed and demonstrated such techniques in order to extend the potential of the simplified base station scheme. Some of their recent results are reviewed with emphasis on operational principles and applications to transmission over standard single mode fibers.
