High performing, lightweight insulation capable of operating at various pressures from one atmosphere to vacuum, is needed for cryogenically fueled space launch vehicles. Multilayer insulation (MLI) out performs all insulations systems in a high vacuum, but the required vacuum shell for use in the atmosphere is heavy. Spray-on foam insulation (SOFI) is often used on launch vehicles because of its light weight, but can have higher heat flux than required for extended on-orbit cryopropellant operation. It would be beneficial to have insulation capable of meeting both ground hold and in space requirements.
