To grasp the occurrence mechanisms and regularity of tunnel traffic accidents and put forward targeted accident prevention measures, this paper investigates 8 representative highway tunnels. Based on research data, this paper performs a comparative analysis of several typical types of tunnel traffic accident characteristics, such as time distribution, spatial distribution, accident form, accident cause, and vehicle type. This paper studies the relationship between the tunnel traffic accident rate and traffic volume and reveals the potential factors influencing tunnel traffic safety. Main points and countermeasures for tunnel traffic safety management are proposed.
