Airframe manufacturers, avionics companies, satellite operators and major airlines have launched programs to develop high speed data services for use on commercial aircraft and business jets. Inmarsat currently supplies aircraft with medium-rate data service and high quality voice throughout the world on both spot-beams and global beams. In 2001 EMS Technologies began installing Inmarsat BGAN transceivers on military and commercial aircraft. These terminals provide full-duplex communications at 64KBPS per channel with two channels offered in the standard configuration. With the launch of Inmarsat 4 satellites the data rates achievable with the BGAN service will be increased substantially. Programs, such as Connexion-By-Boeing however aim to leapfrog this capability with data rates of several MBPS being proposed.
