We transform a linearly polarized Gaussian beam into a radially polarized doughnut beam using an eight-segment spirally varying retarder (SVR) at wavelength of 808 nm, and obtain ≫ 96% of polarization purity at far field distribution. The SVR is designed based on the linear birefringence of ¿-barium borate (¿-BBO) crystal and fabricated using a dry etching technique.
