Amtrak's contract with General Electric for 52 locomotives represents a step forward in the quest for modern equipment with microprocessor controls, diagnostics, redundancy, and automatic data communications. The performance characteristics include higher horsepower, improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions, increased crew comfort, higher crash resistance, and larger fuel tanks, all within the same weight and axle constraints as existing 3000 HP F40 equipment. The control system and diagnostic functions of the engine are described. The body construction, comfort cab, auxiliary equipment, and head-end power generation are detailed. Third rail operation is discussed, and AC traction is reviewed.<>
