Filtered Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (f-OFDM) is a strong contender for modulation format to be used in Fifth Generation (5G) cellular communication standards as it addresses OFDM based system’s limitation of excessive Out of Band Radiation (OOB), without eliminating its benefits. This modulation scheme employs a windowed sinc filter in time domain at the transmitter end. To correctly decode the information transmitted, it is essential for the receiver to have a filter matched to that used at the transmitter. In this paper, we report the power spectral density and bit error rate performance of an uplink f-OFDM system. An optimal choice for the window function in terms of OOB as well as Bit Error Rate (BER) performance for a single user communication system has been discussed in this paper. The windowing function which shows reduced spectral leakage and best BER performance, has been used for the study of multi user uplink communication scenario.
