The Power Electronic Traction transformer is an application of power electronics in the railway traction system. The development of the Power Electronic Traction transformer system is marked as an important milestone in the railway traction world. The conventional line frequency transformer system was the first established system in the railway traction system and it operates on the line frequency. In practical applications, the efficiency of the conventional line frequency system is abysmal due to the large size, heavy weight, harmonics, and switching losses, etc. So the power electronic traction transformer is developed which increases the overall efficiency of the traction system. The Power electronic traction transformer using a cyclo-converter was the first phase of the development of the Power electronic traction transformer system. It operates with a frequency in a few hundred-hertz range. The Power electronic traction transformer using a series load resonant converter was the second phase of development of the Power electronic traction transformer system, which is the recent development of the power electronic traction transformer system. This system uses a series load resonant converter which operates with a frequency in the kilohertz range, by which the size of the traction transformer can be reduced. ZVS and ZCS are applicable in the case of series loaded resonant converter by which the switching losses can be reduced. The scope of the thesis paper is limited to railway applications. This paper presents the design and simulation of a Power electronic traction transformer with a series load resonant converter.
