The technologies for real-time 3D transmission, retrieval, and display are able to provide much of benefits in remote collaborations and telemedicine areas. In addition, 3D visualization can be applied to perform some tasks in dangerous environment. Several methods for performing 3D optical correlation, including successive mapping of two dimensional (2D) images, 3D joint transform correlation, and 2D filtering have been proposed by researchers. However, most of these suggestions are based on 3D-to-2D mapping, which requires sequential recording of several different 2D perspectives. In this paper, we present an application of volume holographic recordings to 3D object recognition. This method does not require recording of multiple 2D images and is implemented in the Fresnel diffraction regions.
