More Electric Aircraft (MEA) or by "Power- by - Wire" is future trend in aerospace industry where electro-mechanical actuators and Hydrostatic actuators are dominant. Reliability is prime concern in aerospace industry, which has led to development of fault tolerant actuation systems. Fault-tolerant BLDC motors (Brushless Direct Current) with dual, quadruple winding is most popular choice for Electro-mechanical actuation system and Electro-hydrostatic actuation system for MEA applications. This paper proposes a novel fault tolerant BLDC drive configuration, which is capable of tackling winding faults and rotor mechanical faults thus making the complete system fault tolerant for both mechanical and electrical faults. The Complete modeling of the actuation system with redundancy logic is built and performance analysis is carried out for fault conditions.
