We analyzed theoretically the wavelength tuning mechanisms in distributed feedback (DFB) lasers using quantum well intermixing. The main factor that limits the maximum tuning range is elucidated in the analysis. It is due to the increase in carrier density required to maintain the gain above the threshold after the bandgap is blue-shifted by intermixing. The effect of grating period is also investigated and shown to have strong effects. Changing the grating period can shift the maximum tuning range from 3.5 nm to 20 nm.
