Linear Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave (LFMCW) radar can be used to monitoring the aircraft docking as its high range resolution and frequency resolution. It is needed to calculate the range of aircraft from the intermediate frequency (IF) signal which contains the range information can be acquired by mixing the echo signal and local oscillator signal. The IF signal is simple cosine whose frequency is related to the range. In this article, a new method named Shifting and Normalizing Energy Transform (SNET) is presented to get the accurate range information. This method is based on Parseval's identity which indicates that the energy in the time domain is equal to the energy in the frequency domain. This method also makes use of the shifting property of Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and normalizes the energy. From the normalized energy, the intermediate frequency can be estimated. In this article, the parallel calculation to decrease the calculation complexity is presented. The algorithm is complemented in Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) which is suitable to the parallel calculation. The parallel calculation is beneficial to implement the real-time ranging. This method is verified by measurements.
