An inorganic-organic hybrid (IOH) based on silica particles and polyethylene (PE) is investigated, where silica is an analogue to lunar soil grains. The PE content ranges from as low as 2 wt% to 19%. The IOH can be regarded as a “prototype” of “lunar cement”. Even with the lowest PE content (2 wt%), the flexure strength is 2.35 MPa, comparable with that of ordinary portland cement. It was found that employing an appropriate silica particle size gradation is beneficial to improving the structural integrity of the material.
