Summary form only given. Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) has become the transport mechanism of choice. This packet-switched technology places user data within a 48-byte payload of a 53 byte cell (5 bytes of the cell are used for routing and header information). These cells are typically transported over optical transmission links using the SONET standard to define the transport mode. Typical SONET rates for ATM transport range from 155 Mbps to 2.5 Gbps.
