Although the UK had experienced EMP effects in nuclear tests it was not until the sixties that the civil and military authorities in general became activiely aware of the potentially hazardous effects of NEMP on their systems. The main areas of concern originally addressed were Army tactical support systems, aircraft, ships and static communication installations. Due to its nuclear weapon testing experience the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment (AWRE) has always been the main centre in the UK for R&D into EMP generation and effects and much of the work on simulator design, instrumentation and system assessment has been carried out there. Aircraft testing and assessment is performed at the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) and the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment (A & AEE). The Admiralty Surface Weapons Establishment (ASWE) deals with ship-borne equipment. AWRE concerned themselves primarily with military systems and providing advice and support to defence contractors.
