A compact, transmissive dispersion compensator is a key device for pulse compression and recompression in ultrashort-pulse lasers as well as in high-bit-rate long-distance optical communication systems. One such device has recently been proposed and numerically demonstrated by Peschel et al. (1995). It consists of two dissimilar waveguides in which group velocity dispersion (GVD) is greatly enhanced by supermodes. The present paper reports on pulse compression by using a highly dispersive InGaAsP/InP slab-type coupled-waveguide structure.
