Laser techniques are widespread in modern investigations of internal engine combustion. Applications. in internal engine combustion and in jet engines assess mixture formation, and temperature distribution as starting conditions for the combustion as well as burnt gas temperature and pollutant concentrations (nitric oxide and soot) distributions. Besides point measurements, multidimensional measurements showing multiple species simultaneously with two-dimensional imaging techniques allow detailed insight in the combustion process. Linear laser techniques applied to these systems range from scattering techniques (Rayleigh, Mie, Raman) to laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and laser-induced incandescence (LLT).
