Self-driving cars have garnered significant attention and debate in recent years, with many viewing their widespread adoption as inevitable, despite several unresolved technological and legal challenges. However, the long-term impacts of this technology are rarely explored in the literature. The effects—both direct and indirect, positive and negative—are diverse, and predicting the overall societal impact is challenging. This study aims to identify and analyze some of these potential outcomes, exploring the conditions under which autonomous vehicles could benefit or harm the broader transportation system. Specifically, it examines how self-driving technology might influence the attractiveness of car travel, how that might affect mode choices, and how changes in these choices could reshape the transportation network. The study outlines two theoretical scenarios based on different behavioral responses to the introduction of autonomous vehicles, using a well-established system dynamics model to illustrate the key factors. Various policy interventions are explored, and a wide range of potential consequences are considered.
