Summary form only given. Spectrum-sliced multi-wavelength light sources have been attracting much interest for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems. Broadband light sources such as super-luminescent diodes have been used for this purpose. The drawback of spectrum slicing of incoherent light may be low power and large excess intensity noise caused by spontaneous emission beat noise. In this work, high power tapered SLDs have been developed and broad-band emission can be realized with non-uniform quantum well structures. The active region consists of strained Ga/sub 0.4/In/sub 0.6/As QWs (6 nm thick) with quaternary barriers.
