Passenger vehicles available to today's consumers are increasingly available with a variety of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping, automated emergency braking, and more. These systems use various sensors to acquire information about the driving environment, including RADAR, and cameras. Additionally, it is expected that LIDAR sensors will also be utilized on consumer vehicles in the near future. This report describes an approach to quantify the comparative advantages (and vulnerabilities) of individual automotive sensors based on empirical measurements. A key contribution of this research is its definition of metrics of performance, and identification of key functionality essential to autonomy.
