The traffic demand of expressway is increasing year by year, and congestion occurs frequently, so the situation analysis is urgent. By combing the relevant contents of the current traffic situation research, the deficiencies of the traffic situation research are found, the definition and content of the traffic situation are given, and the flow and key technologies of the traffic situation analysis are clarified. The improved van aerde model is derived to describe the traffic state; ARIMA model is given as the method of traffic flow prediction, and the hierarchical evaluation index of traffic situation based on running speed is established, which provides theoretical support for the further research of traffic situation and the formulation of management and control strategy.
