A computational scheme is presented for dynamic route travel time prediction. The basis for this method is macroscopic simulation which yields the time-dependent speed profile along all routes of a given network. Then the concept of virtual vehicles is introduced which moves test vehicles from relevant origins to selected destinations according to the respective mean speed values. Two application examples underline the efficiency of the concept: multimodel driver information in an urban corridor; and user optimal rerouting on an interurban freeway network.
