We demonstrate for the first time that the unwanted relaxation oscillations in the overdriven DFB laser output can be suppressed by using a steep-edge notch filter. The filtering is realised using a mechanically tunable fibre Bragg grating (FBG) and is achieved without significant loss of the useful pulsed signal. In the experiment, several quantum-well DFB laser diodes from different manufacturers have been used.
